Bei Katzen wird das Wachstum und die Struktur der Fellhaare teilweise durch das Gen für den Lysophosphatidsäurerezeptor 6 (LPAR6) gesteuert. Eine rezessive Mutation dieses Gens ist für das charakteristische lockige Fell der Rasse Cornish Rex verantwortlich.
Klinische Merkmale
Affected cats develop fur without guard hairs and awn hairs, which normally form the outer layers of a coat. Instead, their coat is exclusively made up of down hairs, which are extremely fine and naturally wavy or curly, typically falling in washboard-like waves. As these hairs are relatively thin and fragile, affected cats are somewhat prone to developing bald patches, and are more sensitive to cold temperatures than other cats.
